ABOUT ME

Miryam Johnson Estrada is a Detroit based Movement Artist, Community Organizer and Dance Educator. Within the last decade, she has spearheaded advocacy efforts and organized programming with focuses on Arts Accessibility and Arts Integration across the Public Education, Museum and Non Profit sectors. Utilizing her degrees in Dance Performance and African American Studies earned through Eastern Michigan University, she brings a keen culturally competent understanding to all aspects of her work. This work has connected her to collaborate and consult with local and national institutions such as; University Musical Society, Living Arts Detroit, Detroit Public Schools, Detroit Dance Collective, and Daring Dances.  

Johnson’s movement artistry and dance education practices explore the intersection of Improvisatory, Polyrhythmic and Somatic movement techniques to create spaces that prioritize fullness of the mover while emphasizing the connection between the mind and body.

Her choreographic work have been presented by The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, The Henry Ford Museum, Eastern Michigan University, Detroit Dance Collective, Living Arts Detroit, Sidewalk Arts Festival, Women’s Work, the historic Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, The Masonic Temple Detroit, Sphinx Organization and University of Michigan Museum of Art. 

Miryam is a Co-Founder and Artistic Leader of Collective Sweat Detroit, a dancer led non-profit  devoted to building fellowship in the Detroit dance community.
